Steps To Take Before Purchasing Your First Suspension

Rate this Entry
Many car enthusiasts start off differently on what they plan on doing to their car. For me, I’ve always been a suspension person. The first few steps are usually struts and springs or coilovers, rims and possibly brakes, depending on what I plan on using the car for, (everyday driver, Weekend Car, Everyday Driver with a trip to the track two or three times a year).

With any suspension upgrade, you will sacrifice some comfort for handling. Hopefully, this will help you with your choice.

If you have never had a sport suspension set up before, it’s a good idea to find a friend that does. Take a ride with him or her in their car and get a feel of what you may be in for. Nothing is worse then spending your hard earned money on a kit, being happy how your car looks then feeling miserable after driving over a speed bump out of the parkinglot.

A long drive is best, drive on a variaty of roads, from inner city, where the roads are cracked and pot holed, on a smooth highway, and through a parking lot to tackle some speed bumps. If you feel that "Hey this isnt as bad as I thought" then maybe a suspension upgrade is the way to go.

From there on you will have to decide what is best for you. Do you want the look? The Handling? The Comfort? or a bit of everything.
The choice then lies into three main catagories.

Springs, Struts (or Shocks) and coil overs.

Springs will give you the "look" you want. That lowered more agressive stance, without sacrificing to much in comfort. In a luxury car you will likly lose that "Cloud" feeling. It will become, informative but not punishing.

Struts will give you a more stiffer feel and are usually used in conjuction with springs. Most companies will offer their own spring and strut combos. This will give you that lowered stance, as well as a more stiffer feel. Struts come in a variaty of variants, both adjustable and non adjustable

Finnally there are coilovers, these are usually the most expensive. They come with standard with Damping adjustability as well as hieght ajustability. These usually will give you the most stiff rides, with the most variaty of useage. If you plan on driving your car to work everyday, and playing on the track these may be the ones for you.

I suggest that if you want to purchase rims for your car, to do it after getting your suspension done. Some of us have been there, where we have purchased a set of tires and wheels, one year, and found out that after we lowered the car, we have rubbing issues.

I cant tell you which suspension is best for your car, noone can, everyone will have differnt likes and dislikes, the best thing you can do, is do your research. And always have a little bit of extra money for a camber kit just incase, if you have a jurastic drop, you may need one to correct that camber, or you'll be purcashing new tyres...very...very soon.
