2010 Toronto Autoshow

Well another auto show is over... It has left me disappointed and questioning what an auto show is in these modern days. We had more fun observing the behaviours of people then actually looking at the cars. This was more a living anthropology study then a fun day looking at cars.

I’ll get the car stuff out of the way first, if I won the lottery tonight there was only about 10 cars I would consider buying... take away the exotics and there would be 5 left.

So ask yourself what exactly is an auto show? Well long before the internet and even TV, an auto show was to get all the major manufactures together and showcase the new cars so people would know about them and potentially want to buy them... but it’s not any more... with the evolution of the internet and TV we know about new models long before we get around to seeing them at the auto show... so what exactly is an auto show now? We’ll you might think it’s another avenue for dealers to sell cars but I would have to disagree. Because the only thing the reps where concerned about was you not touching their cars. So if you think the auto show is another sales even well I would have to suggest that you’re wrong... if you can figure out what a modern auto show is well them please do let me know.

Now to address my observation of human behaviour.
You have to ask why a company like Lamborghini or even Ferrari would attend such an event when their counter parts Rolls Royce, Bentley and Porsche did not even bother showing up... which made me question why they even bother attending. What's in it for them... we as far as I can tell nothing. A person who is going to buy a Lamborghini or Ferrari isn’t going to do it at the auto show they are going to book and appointment and take in the who dealer and purchase ambiance. You could clearly tell Lamborghini reps would rather be poked in the eye with a pencil then want to be at that show... but that only if you could interrupt them from reading the morning newspaper.

One fellow in a worn out track suit did get their attention I didn’t know how. Picture a well dress most likely Italian talking to a fat middle aged man in a track suit about a Lamborghini. The best part about the conversation is I could over hear everything and this fellow was trying to impress the Lamborghini rep... I love when people try to pretend they are big shots and clearly they are not... myself personally if I want to see a Lamborghini ill go to the dealership or find someone who has one that I know. I went look ah here is a Gallardo and Mercilago... next... I know what they are and have seen it before. Big deal. Did you try and take a picture of these cars and then get home with your point and shoot camera or cell phone an realize there is nothing there... I am speculating they did this on purpose to black cars black background anyone who knows anything about photography well tell you use a flash and you’ll get nothing. Unless you know what you’re doing and have a good camera and knowledge about how to use it 90% of the people who snapped pics of the lambo got a black nothing.

Ask yourself how a multimillion dollar company like Lamborghini has to have their cars roped off in a 100 buy 50 foot box but a wax company can have two cars that are arms reach away.

Ferrari’s attempt at a booth was amateur they had one car the California roped off you couldn’t get near it. Again why bother showing up.

Why do people attend the auto show with Dslr’s and try to do a photo shoot... who wants a picture of a car with 100 strangers in... Do these people not have the internet and know there are much better pictures of every car... that don’t contain 100 people? Next year we will be walking around with models lighting makeup and everything you would need for a photo shoot.

We were disappointed to find out there was no sky dome this year and Nissan pulled their free parking.

I don’t know maybe I am weird but I can tell you if this is an example of whets to come I don’t think I’ll be attending the shows anymore... I’ll take my 20 dollar parking, my 20 dollar burger, and 20 dollar admission to some other event.
I had written a much better blog but my computer crashed and this is all I can remember from what I had before it took.

So let me introduce you to the top three auto show weirdo’s/ human studies we observed that wonderful day.
This guy wins prize number one “The I’m too busy to clip my fingernails at home in the privacy of my bathroom so I’ll do it in the middle of the auto show while I walk around guy”

Second prize goes to this guy “Anyone up for extreme walking” this guy was hauling so much ass around the show every picture we took was blurred.

And third prize goes to this guy “I don’t know if there is a new type of camera yoga but this guy was on the floor... bent in strange positions to get the best shots of every car...he literally took over 200 pictures of each car we saw him at and we found him 5 or 6 times thru out the day”

If this is what the human race has come to it makes me very scared.

Nice summary Andrew. I have to give props to Audi for actually letting people sit in the R8 this year.
