The Genesis Coupe

I've been seeing a few of these on the road now and you know it's very hard to believe that we're looking at a Korean sports car that has spawned from one of the fastest growing automakers in the world. Since it's debut at the autoshow last February, I've been wanting to test-drive one of these babies.

At 306 hp @ 6,300 RPM and 266 lb-ft of torque @ 4,700 RPM for $35,000 it is quite a bang for your buck. And according to a friend of mine who had the most AMAZING test-drive of his life, it is quite the bang even at launch.

So his story goes...
He drove into the Hyundai lot in his new A4 to see what the hype was all about with this new coupe. A younger sales rep rocking a pair of shades walks across the floor to greet him and tells him that's a very nice car he's driving. So my buddy tells him that he's looking for something a little more sporty and the rep goes "Great. I've got something for you!"

They grab the keys and hop into a 3.8L Genesis Coupe and as they're walking to the car he asks my buddy "do you know how to do donuts?". My buddy says "Of course". They get in the car and my friend starts the engine. The guy tells him "Okay who are we kidding here, anyone who is going to buy this car is going to speed. So let's speed". He makes my friend redline at every single gearshift and then somewhere along the test-drive tells him to pull into an empty parking lot.

"Turn off traction control. Now let's see some donuts".

He almost cried at how great the test-drive was. But it's not over...

So they're driving back to the dealership and at one of the red lights this oldschool Ferrari pulls up beside him.

"You think you can take him?"
"Umm I don't know."
"Rev your engine."

So my friend revs his engine twice.
The Ferrari revs back.

"Okay game on."

Then my friend rips it. Tires squeel for a moment and within a half second he's gone!

I asked my friend if he smoked the Ferrari and he says "are you kidding me? That Ferrari was like 5 car lengths ahead."

So the rep goes "don't worry, we'll get him next time".

My friend said that he was SO pleased with the test-drive he almost wanted to buy it right then and there. What a salesman!! Every car salesman should be like this!!! :o

I have to say though, a car that can look like this, even for the 2.0L Turbo at about $25,000 is definitely a wicked contester.

It'll have to be an SLK 350 or a C300 then. B is too high to run track.
Stripped out, manual Tranny!

Maybe an AMG would be okay too...

If AMG, maybe SLK, C, or CLK!

did somebody say CLK?

I've read a lot of stuff about this. Im pretty happy that there's finally another cheap sports car out there for people to have fun in. ad there's already a lot of talk about mods for the 2L turbo.

but Ill never be able to own one. my insurance is to high. lol.

I've seen a black on in my area the other night, and already modded with a carbon fibre hood, i thought it was a Supra, but it was still somewhat different.

I'll admit it looks nice, but still can't see if being best bang for buck.

$35k plus all the fees, taxes etc would make it around 40k, for that someone could buy a real bang for a buck like a low mileage E39 M5, E46 M3, Clk 55 AMG, and so on.

if it could not beat an older ferrari, then its not really that powerful, because a E39 540i 6 speed with only 300hp can run low 13's stock, a light copue like this with 300hp should have owned the older ferrari, since typically when someone says old ferrari, they tend to be really high 13 second cars in the right hands, even slow in others.

but thats just me, speed freak, it could be a fun car for donuts i guess, and if they keep this up maybe the next one could even change my mind.

good story, although im not sure if the salesman is actually allowed to tell a buyer to be so careless with their product and on the road. The salesperson wants to sell cars so he can make the big bucks, so he's bending the rules.

I was told this exact same thing, when i got the job at Downtown Toyota last month, but i didn't take the job. I might take it when they come out with a new supra.lol
Did I say BEST Bang for buck? I meant it is great bang for buck.

However, your comparison is not apple-to-apple. New cars vs. used cars is completely different thing.

I take that story for it's entertainment value. I would definitely want a rep like that guy.

but you have to admit, 35 for a new car, its pretty good, for what you are getting. I havent had the chance to test drive one, so I cant say anything about the interior (I gotta like what I see inside, Im big on this...Im wierd...).

Its a car for everyday use, maybe some weekend fun, its good for the cost, in my opinion. Hopefully, this will spawn more lower cost RWD sports cars. Something I can sit on the pavment with. lol

I test drove one, but the there wasnt a GT available
it is an amazing looking car, i love its sporty brembo brakes and 300 HP for a brand new car.

sure there are some nice old classics, but a brand new car is a brand new car!
I think the Genesis is EXCELLENT bang for buck...but hey thats my opinion

I would buy this at 35K over 60k G37, not the same sure... but still a lot of car for the price

Exactly, its a great car for the cost. Eventually people are going to get fed up with buying used broken down abused sports car, and want a nice new sports car. I couldnt afford a CLK or an SLK new, or even a G35 for that matter, but a 2.0 T Genesis is a great buy for a cheap sports car. Especially for a proper sports car.

There are a lot of "sports cars" out there, they are sporty, but as a sports car...? not really. They have to many comforts. Is my CLK a sports car? not really, its a luxury coupe, its "sporty" but made to be comfortable.

Im not arguing that "OMG THIS IS THE BEST CAR EVERRR!!!" Im just saying its a great option for the money for a new car, where you dont have to spend an extra 5-10 grand on repairs in the first year like a used sports car.

I like the car but I font really like how it looks. of course its going to be thge scourge of the street scene. there are going to be hundreds of them. just like the Tiburon and the tuscan before it. the thing Im trying to say is that this is suppose to bring back that cheap import scene back.
just like the 240sx's trueno's and levins of yesteryear.

with it will come better and faster high end sportscarS and of course, Higher insurance for all!

Damn this was hard to type on a mobile.

I agree. I think it'll be great for the car scene. The cheap, JDM sports cars have definitely died over the decade. With the RSX, Celica, MR-2, 240sx, RX-7, S2K, all having been killed off, it's hard to find a good cheap sports car for the $20k to $30k price-tag (not even to mention one that's RWD). Yeah there are still a couple of the American rides running around, but Cobalt SS or 240SX? I think I'd take the 240...

If a Skyline (R34) pulled up at the lights on the right and an LP640 pulled up on the lights at the left across from the R34, I can tell you I'd be looking to my right.

I will be looking at the light  and pedal to the floor before it change to green

I think the car is great, for the bucks one would spend to get it

I certainly wouldn't base my purchase on any of the comments made in here, (well most of them)

ohhhh and I used to pick up girls, way before I even had a car..............I only ended up with more once I had one......I have had big cars, little cars, even bigger trucks, and none of them had any effect on my manhood, or my capability of attracting girls

Heck if I had the urge,,, I'd get the Cadillac CTS V ? the one with like 500+ horse, blows the doors off of the BMW M5, but boy do I love the BMW's, I've owned more than one of those......but never a Caddy....

Right now I like my C350, and will keep it till lease end, then who knows............

@DarthVader - no offense, but some of your posts do come off a bit more than just your opinion, you make it more of a statement and a belief, than just an opinion, I guess that is what got some peeps backs up, and the comments made to your "opinions"

Cheers.....
